Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "1. Reds Invade South Korea," illustrating a North Korean military tank and airplane carrying out an attack against South Korea in June 1950, reverse side of card describes North Korea crossing the 38th parallel, their military might, South Korea's free election, and the position that the UN took.

North Korean military crossed the 38th parallel border (division between North Korea and South Korea) on June 21, 1950 ordered by Kim Il-Sung, which led to several clashes between the two armies.
