At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection of press photographs taken by Associated Press and United Press International dated 1960-1970. Consists of wirephotos and telephotos depicting civil rights protests. Protests in this collection took place across the United States with a focus on voter registration practices, desegregation in the classrooms, and police brutality. There is a warning that some images do capture violence by police against Black people.
