At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Group of 103 press photos of the events surrounding the aftermath of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Featured wirephotos are from either United Press International or Associated Press. Subjects include the meetings of civil rights leaders with policiticans, documentation of the scene of the crime, the marches undertook in King's honor, the lying in state of King's body, and his funeral. The majority of the photos are of the funeral ceremony of Dr. King. Featured promiently in the photos are Dr. King's family including his wife, Coretta Scott King, his children, and his parents. Photos of the funeral cermenony include images of visiting dignitaries including Vice President Hubert Humphrey, Senator Robert Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Richard Nixon. Photo series ends with police pictures of James Earl Ray, the assassin of Dr. King.
