At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One Associated Press wirephoto dated April 5, 1968. Depicts a newsman in the room rented by James Earl Ray, Martin Luther King's assassin, in a motel adjacent to the Lorraine hotel.

The motel in which the assassin stayed is referred to as a "flophouse" in the wirephoto text description.
