At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One poster entitled, "Oversubscribe this Victory Liberty Loan," dated 1918. Text refers to the service rendered by Sergeant Grady Parrish at Cote de Chatillon on October 16th. Advertisement suggests how Parrish wouldn't have been able to complete an attack against Prussians without weaponry. Artwork is a portrait of Parrish painted at the frontlines by Joseph Cummings Chase.
