At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. One map entitled A Map of Part of the Rivers Faleme & Sanaga with the Countries of Bambuk & Tamba Awra drawn on the spot by M. Compagnon dated 1750. Contains the entire continent of Africa, as well as a small portion of the Middle East. The island of Madagascar is also included. The map is shaded to indicate different countries or regions. In the lower left corner is a decorated cartouche with tropical plants, an African man, a crocodile, and a monkey in the trees.
