At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One poll tax receipt from Travis County, Texas dated December 11, 1934. This receipt is for the payment of a one dollar seventy five cent poll tax paid by Max Bickler and signed by A.W. Grubble, Deputy and Karl H. Schmidt Tax collector. The receipt also lists Bickler's age; 53 years, his occupation; Sec. Supreme Court, and his complexion; white. On the rear of the receipt it is stamped that he voted April 1, 1935 and November 14, 1935.
