Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Requesting permission to ship twenty-five barrels of flour. Written to Jenifer while president of the Maryland Council of Safety. Andre was most likely a French merchant.

Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer served as president of the Maryland council of safety, president of the first state senate, sat in the Continental Congress, and was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention.
