Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A reciept acknowledging the final payment for land ceded by the Six Nations at the Treaty of Fort Stanwix.
With the loss of these lands the Six Nations eventually dispersed: the Mohawk and Cayuga to Canada, the Oneida to Wisconsin, while the Onondaga, Seneca and Tuscarora stayed in upstate New York.
