At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Issue number one of the comic book called Negro Heroes. This comic features biographies of famous and influential African Americans. The people featured in this issue are, George Washington Carver, Mary McLeod Bethune, Paul Robeson, Matt Henson, Charles French, Charles Davis and Charles Thomas. Each person has a few pages dedicated to their story.
