Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written to Richardson at High Hills of Santee, South Carolina. Notifies Richardson to deliver by the order of General Andrew Pickens 100 pounds of powder, 100 muskets and bayonets, 1000 cartouch boxes, one ream of cartridge paper, and one pound of thread out of the state stores. Note on p. 2 signed by Fields Pardy certifies receipt of the goods 16 July 1782. Mathews was governor of South Carolina from 1782-1783.
