Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Minutes taken on August 28, 1794. Lists the members in the town of Prospect, Maine and possibly the number of acres owned by each of them. Discusses further land deals. Also mentions agreements made with the people of Prospect township in 1788 and all who have arrived since. Notes 70 loads of hay has been cleared from the meadow. City was added later in red pen.
