Concerning subtenants using slaves on property given to his father in recognition for his Revolutionary War service. Working the slaves is a violation of a provision prohibiting the use of slave labor. He assures the recipient that the violation will be corrected. Marked "Confidential." Docket states the letter was received 31 August 1847, so written before then.
George W. Lafayette, son of the American Revolutionary hero the Marquis de Lafayette, was a French army officer and politician.
