Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly contained within the 1863 diary of Calvin Symmes Mixter (refer to GLC06583.02), a Civil War soldier. No publication date is listed. A printed message at the bottom of the page indicates this song was sold at Horace Partridge, an importer and wholesale dealer located in Boston. Each verse describes missing loved ones and the patriotic duty of serving in the war. Possibly printed as a broadside.
