One document signed by James W. Howard dated December 1, 1859. This sale record notes the sale of five enslaved people by James W. Howard and his wife Martha to James M.N. The enslaved people are named and described in the document; "I Sam a man aged thirty two years, Salina a woman aged forty six years, Billy a boy aged thirteen years, Ed a Boy aged eight years and Rachel a Girl aged sixteen years." The document also notes that Martha Howard, also identified as Martha A. Roquemore, had a mortgage on all her husband's property, and she was waiving her rights in regard to the enslaved people. Notary Claudius M. Pegues witnesses the document.
