Question 1

The Egyptian pharaoh–inspired headgear worn by Sun Ra in the poster reflects the influence of which other twentieth-century Black cultural movement?

Answer

The Anticolonialism Movement focused on the end of modern European domination of African states. Sun Ra celebrated a connection to the glory of ancient African history, not the liberation of twentieth-century Egyptians.

The Black Panthers had their own unique style of leather jackets and berets. The Panthers did embrace some Afrocentric fashions and natural hairstyles but not clothing from Africa, which was popular with cultural nationalists or Black Arts advocates.

Elijah Muhammad’s Nation of Islam (NOI) was connected to African history, but members of the NOI wore traditional western business attire with short-cropped hair and refrained from embracing the Afrocentric aesthetics of the 1960s and 1970s.

The Black Arts movement, among other tenets, celebrated Afrocentric aesthetics in fashion, and deliberately sought to strengthen their connections to Africa, including the legacy of ancient Egypt.
