When the mother of a teenage lynching victim held an open-casket funeral for her child, it catalyzed a growing civil rights movement. 

Survivors hired Black architect Vertner Tandy to design Villa Lewaro as a site for future community gatherings and fundraising.

Survivors with destroyed property were unable to pass this property on to their descendants, thus limiting the building of intergenerational wealth.

The riot ended when federal troops set up a permanent post in Tulsa, ushering in a Second Reconstruction era.
