Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Hutchinson, a soldier in the Continental Army, requests a receipt for the Quakers in the town of Lynn for the payment of soldiers. Lists two soldiers and the amount of pay. States he is in great need of it and asks him to bring it when he returns from Boston.

Holten was a Continental Congressman. Both Hutchinson and Holten were from Danvers, Massachusetts.
