Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to Brigadier General Scammon, commanding 2nd Division Kanawha. Introduces an informant named Henry McGlaughlin, a citizen of Virginia and a former scout for the 30th Regiment O.V.I. [Ohio Volunteer Infantry?]. There is an autograph endorsement on the verso, possibly by Scammon but unsigned, noting the location of Confederate Generals John B. Floyd and Humphrey Marshall.
