Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Full title: "A journal over 1,000,000 acres of land in the County of Hancock & Washington, sold by government to General Jackson & others- containing a description of the soil, growth river, lakes, ponds, brooks, mountains, plains, swamps, meadows & commencing Monday 15 October 1792." Created by William Albee and Joseph Pierpont, with additional notes by John Peters. Lists the names of inhabitants of specific areas of the land. Meticulous in detail, the survey includes numbers of trees, etc., and presents analyses of the land for potential use.
