Smith, a prominent abolitionist, philanthropist, and political reformer, transmits a circular (not included) which contains an extract from one of President Grant's recent speeches (not included, but possibly on the topic of civil rights).
Gerrit Smith was a supporter of abolition, women's rights, temperance, and civil rights. He was a supporter of John Brown and provided Brown with funding for his raid on Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. He was elected to the United States Congress as a member of the Free Soil party and ran as a third-party candidate for U.S. President and for Governor of New York.
