Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General Canby replies to a note from Cist, in St. Louis, Missouri. Writes, "The date of my commission as Brig Genl. is March 31. 1862 and as Major General May 7. 1864." Written on Headquarters, Military Division of the West Mississippi stationery; this title has been struck, and Department of the Gulf has been written in its place. One bust engraving of Canby included as collateral.

Cist collected autographs for the United States Sanitary Fairs.
