Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Crittenden, General of Kentucky Militia, writes to Magoffin, Governor of Kentucky. Asks Magoffin to accept an enclosed resignation (not included), noting hat Mr. Barr "cannot accept any office that would take him away from here." Docket notes "accepted," and contains Magoffin's name (possibly his signature). One bust engraving of Crittenden included as collateral.

Magoffin served as Governor of Kentucky 1859-1862.
