Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Brigadier General French writes to Major Parisen from headquarters of the 3rd Brigade, Sumner's division: "Understanding that the Lieutenant Colonel of the 57th N. Y. Volunteers, has been mustered out of service, and you being the next Field officer in the regular line for promotion, I beg to hope you will receive the appointment on account of your constant labors to promote the efficiency of your regiment and for the zeal and energy displayed in duties connected with this Brigade..."
