Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General Lovell writes to Kimmel, Assistant Adjutant General. Reports that the 1st Corps is divided into two divisions. General Lloyd Tilghman has been assigned command of the 1st Division, and General Albert Rust the 2nd. There are three brigades per division, and brigades of the 1st Division will be commanded by Colonels William Edwin Baldwin, A. Heiman (possibly Adolphus Heiman), and D. A. Russell. General John B. Villepigue will command the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, and other brigades in the 2nd division will be commanded by senior colonels whose names are not included. Encloses a return of the 1st Division (not included). Lovell writes from the Headquarters of the First Corps. One bust engraving of Lovell included as collateral.
