Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General Ord writes to Rawlins, Chief of Staff, General Headquarters of the United States Army. Encloses a report of Brevet Brigadier General Hoyt (report not included), whom Ord had sent to Cleveland, Ohio under special telegraphic instructions. Written on Headquarters, Department of the Ohio stationery. One bust engraving of Ord included as collateral.
