At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sir,
I am obligated to let you know that I spoke to my [illegible], which in his honorable words at his arrival, since forty days ago. In the time that is left for us, he will be willingly able to pay the entire amount.
Sir, what I would like to make known, which hopefully you will provide charity; for truth full pleasure for the current motif; an in consequence the main truth is that I have the need for clothes, and something to vest in, mainly because I look forward to nothing in life, but I am conferred to your greatness, I would like to ask for charity to lend me some what of a great sum of money; when the time of paying back comes, it will be a necessity, at the time it arrived here all will be paid.
I render grace & inform to my honorable [illegible] at this direction, nevertheless, I will not miss in telling the confessor of your wonderful qualities and when you are obliged all will be in affect of your great honor and sentiment.
