Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lomax, Forrest, and Jordan sign as witnesses. Brent, Justice of the Peace for Washington, D.C., signs separately as a witness. Tayloe authorizes Lomax, his attorney, to act as a trustee of the estate of the deceased Ralph Wormeley. As trustees, Tayloe and Lomax transfer a parcel of Wormeley's land to Leonard Bristowe.
