Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

It is difficult to find water on march as the streams have all dried up; the river they are camped by is the first running water he has seen since they crossed the Ohio. He read a letter from his father to John and found it most encouraging. The regiment was "pretty badly cut to pieces at Perrysville;" "the boys fell around me as fast as grass before a scythe." He is now Orderly Sergeant.
