Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Between 1837 and 1844, Thomas McKenney and James Hall collected and published a series of hand-colored lithographs depicting Native American tribal leaders and members of their parties. These lithographs were based on paintings done while the leaders visited Washington, D.C to sign treaties.
