At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses issues related to a land survey.

Roberts was an attorney and government official in the Republic of Texas. At the time of this writing he was Texas' acting secretary of state; the following month he became the secretary of state.
Franklin, a judge and legislator, served in the Texas Revolution. At the time of this letter he represented Galveston County in the Texas House of Representatives.
