Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Received his letter through Ephraim, "in which I see that you are not dead yet but alive and kicking." Compliments his writing, wishes "they would all write like you do." Will give him a full account of his travels in Pennsylvania in his next letter. Hopes this note will find him in good health.
