Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One page from the New York Weekly Museum dated June 25, 1808. Features an article entitled "The Fate Of Fitz Charles" concerning a man named Henry Fitz Charles who was accused of killing his estranged father in self defense.There are also articles entitled "THe Generous Father" "True Courage " "Early rising " and " Striking Friendship of two Negroes." The paper also included three poems "Lines to an Affectionate Mother," "Beauty and Virtue" and "To Fashion."
