Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving of William Wilberforce dated 1881. Wilberforce is framed by other images including; a white person dressed as a warrior protecting a cowering African person from another white person holding chains with a raised hand. The illustrated frame is also covered in farming implements and a scroll which reads, "Act for Abolition of the Slave Trade."
