At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One issue of the Extra Globe dated June 26, 1835. Features an extensive article on Martin Van Buren's opinion on slavery in the territories specifically the Missouri Question. Also contains a small mention of Santa Anna entering the capitol of Zacatecas. Other articles include; The Constitution "Old Ironsides" arriving in the New York harbor and Opposition to the Martin Van Buren candidacy in Kentucky.
