At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One colored engraving entitled "The Man of Feeling in search of Indispensibles" dated February 12, 1800. Features a room full of women. One woman is etering the room via a door on the right of the image. A man kneels in the center inspecting dresses that are being worn for pockets causing chaos. The caption indicated that he is seaching for the location of the pockets that have become a new fashion.
