Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Gerald Handy to Mary and Donald Lawyer dated April 20, 1969. He writes addressing them as Mom and Dad. Updates them on his recent service and on a friend paying him back from a loan. He also mentions going back to Vietnam but in a letter to Donna on the 13th (GLC09908.27) he mentions going to Camp Evans which is in Vietnam Northwest of Hue.
