Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports cavalry attacks on Confederates after Gettysburg.

Promoted to brigadier, assigned to command Harpers Ferry in the late summer of 1862. Waived his right to command due to his lack of knowledge of the terrain, and arrested by the War Department. Eventually cleared, he then took part in the Knoxville Campaign. Became Burnside's chief of staff, then was given a division which soon broke up. Went on indefinite sick leave.
