Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

States that the Osage treaty was not ratified before Congress recessed. Vows to not let the treaty ever be ratified, until it is just "to the Government, the State of Kansas, and the people."

Benjamin F. Wade was a senator from Ohio from 1851-1869. Chairman of the Committee on Territories from 1861-1867.
Henry C. Whitney was a state senator for Humboldt, Illinois, who had been involved with the Osage earlier in his life.
