Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Francis Watts of Prince William County having informed him that there are about 500 hundred acres of land adjoining the land of James Murrey, Fairfax authorizes John Murey to survey the land and report the results of the survey to him. Fairfax was Lord Proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia and the only resident Lord Proprietor in America.
