Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Includes Leaming's typed manuscript signed describing the Battle of Fort Pillow, family photographs, and the House of Representatives report on Fort Pillow.

Leaming served as 1st Lieutenant, Adjutant of the 13th Tennessee Cavalry at Fort Pillow, Tennessee, and was present at the controversial battle which took place there in April 1864. It is estimated that 560 Union troops fought 1,500-2,000 Confederate soldiers in the battle. Most of the Union soldiers killed at Fort Pillow, both during and after the battle, were African American. Much historical controversy exists regarding the facts surrounding Fort Pillow.
