Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses bounty land for veterans of the American Revolution. Requests that Hobart obtain and send the warrant issued for Jonathan Bartlett's bounty, which had been approved but not issued. Also asks Hobart, if he can, to send the names of "1200 Massachusetts men who had not obtained that [Revolutionary War] bounty [land]."

There were two Zacheus Bartletts living in Plymouth, Massachusetts when this letter was written, one who lived from 1762-1835, and his nephew, who lived from 1793-1862.
