Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Two letters from Illinois surgeon on the burning of Atlanta and conduct of the war: To Daughter: Confederate machine shops were burned and property destroyed; " I saw the flames rolling up mountains high, away off at Jonesboro nearly twenty miles away..."
To Wife: "Our Army is very much elated at the cheering news from Virgina - we hope they will keep it up."
