Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter dated Seoul, October 3, 1951, addressed to his wife. Describes the feeling of wearing clothes other than his uniform; found a picture from a movie camera that came with three types of lenses (a wide angle lens, a telephoto lens, and a normal lense); details owning a Contex-S on the base; mentions a soldier, Jake Bosseler, who returned to the states for 15 days.
