At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection consists of twenty letters dated 1950 to 1952 from John M. Pemberton to his wife from South Korean military bases. Correspondence largely details his anticipation to return home, expected military combat near Pyongyang, entertainment by the USO tour, financial matters, military personnel changes and rumors of when they would be discharged.
