At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One pamphlet written by Joseph V. Baker entitled, "Not by Power," dated 1956. A long-form photo-essay marking the educational and workforce achievements of African Americans made possible after the Brown v. Board ruling in 1954. Images includes people in fields of education, medicine, industrial work, legal, engineering, political and innovation.

Joseph V. Baker was an African-American who ran his own public relations firm in the 1950s. He focused on marketing products to African Americans and convinced a number of media corporations to integrate their workplaces.
