At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Negro Race" published by Wm S. Orr & Co dated 1851. Engraving features four Africans, two as portraits and two as profiles. In the center of the portraits there is a skull in profile. Each image is labeled with a number between 1 and 5. The engraving is possibly related to eugenics.
