Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Co-signed by Winfield Scott and H.L. Scott. Order No. 19: "The senior field officer of Artillery, Colonel J. Bankhead, 2d Artillery, will enter upon the duties of chief of Artillery as soon as there shall be occasion for planting heavy batteries." Order No. 20 discusses general rules of conduct for army personnel.
