At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One telephoto entitled, "Fire in Harlem" taken by Associated Press. Image depicts a building on fire next to a toy store. Firemen attempt to extinguish the flames as people are seen running away. Attached to the image is a typed note that states the fire took place in a furniture store in Harlem.
