At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An anonymous author criticizes Van Buren and the Free Soil Party, which nominated him as candidate for the 1848 Presidential election: "No event in the history of political parties in this country since the establishment of the government, has excited more surprise, than the recent nomination of Martin Van Buren by the Buffalo Convention, as the Free-Soil, or Anti-Slavery Candidate for the Presidency." Claims Van Buren will be against the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia. Bound with string. Edges slightly worn.
